Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, January 29, 2014 — Christ Church Secondary overcame a sloppy first half to take home the 56–31 win against Punggol Secondary.

Tay Yong Ann (Christ Church #9) tallied a game-high 16 points, while Roshan Ahmad (Punggol #6) had a team-high 12 points.

Javier Tan (Christ Church #8) stood out in the first quarter with his strong drives. He was unstoppable during fast breaks, leaving his defenders behind.

In the second quarter, Darren Boey (Punggol #10) led his team’s offensive plays and demonstrated good ball handling skills. On the other hand, Christ Church pulled down many offensive boards with their dominating physique but struggled with their conversion. As such, Punggol managed to catch up with the scoring and led by a mere point (20–19) by the end of the first half.

Christ Church came back more focused in the third quarter. The trio of Ignatius Lim (#4), Soh Ding Sheng (#6) and Yong Ann (#9) contributed significantly to the scoresheet with their good conversion. Ng Jun Xiang (#14) was dominant with his offensive rebounds, allowing for many second-chance points.

Punggol, however, made several mis-passes and missed many of their shots at the perimeter. They were seemingly limited by Christ Church’s defence and found it hard to drive into the key.

Christ Church went on a 22–4 run to lead 41–24 at the end of the third quarter.

In the final quarter, Christ Church netted most of their shots effortlessly, while Punggol struggled to retain possession. Christ Church eventually took home the win with a final score of 56–31.

Christ Church captain Yong Ann (#9) said, “We played badly in the first half, but our defence got better thereafter. I think we will be focusing on 3-pointers for our next match. We are aiming for a top 8 placing in the nationals.”

Punggol captain Tan Ke Hong (#12) said, “We started quite well, but we lost our momentum after, committing a lot of turnovers. We also had many mis-passes. They had the height advantage. The Christ Church team is very strong and we are honoured to get to play with them. I think this game provides exposure and can help us train better for the zonals next year.”
