NUS Sports and Recreation Centre, Saturday, February 8, 2014 — Defending champions National University of Singapore (NUS) led from the second quarter to clinch a 6–1 win against Raffles Institution (RI) in the NUS Water Polo Open 2014 finals.
Angeline Teo Yi Ling (NUS #8) had a game-high five points, while Neo Ser Han (RI #7) scored the only goal for her team.
NUS opened the scoring with a goal from Angeline Teo Yi Ling (#8). Her first shot was denied by the goalkeeper, but she managed fire the ball past her on the second try, putting NUS up 1–0.
Neo Ser Han (#7) of RI responded promptly to equalize, firing one into the net to level at 1–1. She also worked hard on the defensive end, intercepting a few sloppy passes.
From the first quarter, it seemed that it was going to be a tough fight for the win as both teams appeared to be evenly matched.
However, Angeline (#8) stepped up her game and was strong on drives in the second quarter. She converted a penalty and had many shots on target. One of which found its way to the back of the net. Her teammate Chia T-Chien (#10) followed suit. She was quick in the water, driving and leaving her defenders behind most of the time. The second quarter ended with NUS taking the lead 3–1.
In the third quarter, the RI trio of Dayna Ang Hui Shan (#5), Leow Li Wen (#9) and (#14) tried many shots but just could not find the net. The NUS goalkeeper, Neo Xin En Gloria (#1) played a pivotal role in this quarter, making many good saves to keep her team’s lead. Angeline (#8) scored a penalty to extend NUS’s lead to three points (4–1).
Angeline (#8) grabbed another goal 20 seconds into the final quarter. RI were still trying for shots to turn the situation around, but their efforts came to naught when Melissa Ooi (#6) scored a long-range shot in the final minute to clinch the win (6–1).
RI captain Joanna (#1) said, “I guess we were kind of expecting them to be the stronger team as they are more experienced. I think everyone did quite well in terms of effort, and our defence was good. We worked as a team but at times our shots were off the bars.”
NUS captain Cheryl (#3) said, “We were quite worried for this game. I think everyone played well and RI was really good as well. We had good communication.”
