Bukit Merah Secondary School, Thursday, February 13, 2014 — Bukit Merah Secondary kick-started their National B Division Floorball Championship title defence in style as they defeated Chua Chu Kang Secondary 23–0.
Bukit Merah were aggressive on their offence. The first sign of carnage came when Bukit Merah earned a free-hit around the centre line. The ball was driven towards goal only to be denied by the goal post. Minutes later, Jacqlene Ong (Bukit Merah #14) managed to open the scoring, thus spurring a goal fest. Jacqlene went on to score a hat-trick before the end of the first period.
Edelyn Grace (Bukit Merah #22) scored a memorable goal in the first period. She managed to poke the ball into the net through the legs of the Chua Chu Kang goalkeeper during a frenzied play in the goal crease.
Chua Chu Kang showed glimpses of excellence when their defenders sent accurate low balls directly to attackers. Unfortunately, their shots were comfortably saved by Bukit Merah’s goalkeeper, Shermaine Goh (#52).
The second period saw Bukit Merah players queueing up to take shots on Chua Chu Kang’s goal. Whenever Chua Chu Kang players came forward, they were outnumbered and closed down by a highly disciplined Bukit Merah defence. Things went from bad to worse for Chua Chu Kang when Nur Asyiqin (Chua Chu Kang #10) suffered an injury which forced her to limp off the rink.
The tempo of the game slowed significantly in the third period. With victory out of reach, Chua Chu Kang still displayed admirable spirit to probe for a consolation goal. They were nearly awarded for their determination when a miscommunication between Bukit Merah defenders allowed Chua Chu Kang to gain ball possession and produce a powerful shot that was athletically tipped over by Shermaine Goh (Bukit Merah #52).
In the dying seconds, Nur Farisha (Chua Chua Kang #11) delivered an accurate pass, which sent Nur Amirah (Chua Chu Kang #7) through to go one-on-one against Shermaine Goh (Bukit Merah #52). However Nur Amirah was unable to score.
After racking up an emphatic 23–0 victory, defending champions Bukit Merah are now Group G leaders. They will face Bedok North Secondary School on Thursday, February 20. Chua Chu Kang will play Northland Secondary School on Monday, February 24.
