Republic Polytechnic, Tuesday, February 18, 2014 — Perennial powerhouses Bukit Merah Secondary defeated Si Ling Secondary with a 21–2 win in the National B Division Floorball Championship.
Muhammad Harith Fareez (#21) led all scorers with six goals.
This is Bukit Merah’s second win. They now top Group C of the championship with a 2–0 win–loss record.
Bukit Merah asserted themselves early, scoring two goals in quick succession. This allowed the team to settle down, playing with a calmness that belied their age. On the other hand, Si Ling could be seen frantically defending each possession, in a bid to stop Bukit Merah from scoring. They were helped by the play of their keeper, who managed to keep them in the game with timely saves.
Si Ling managed to pull a goal back to trail 1–2 at one point, but from that point on, Bukit Merah took complete control of the game.
The second period saw Bukit Merah continue their onslaught on the offensive end, creating opportunities with good ball movement. They found particular success going down the left wing, which they exploited to score a lot of goals in the quarter. Each time, they would put the ball across the face of the goal mouth, right to a waiting player on the opposite side, who would slot the ball in. Bukit Merah ended the period up 14–2.
Bukit Merah looked to top the 20-goal mark in the final period, which they succeeded in doing so towards the end. They frequently kept the ball in the Si Ling half, preventing Si Ling from creating any offensive chances. They did a good job of switching sides, exposing the keeper’s gap each time to score even more goals. In the end, Bukit Merah put six past the Si Ling keeper in the period, helping them past the 20-goal plateau. The game ended 21–2 in favour of Bukit Merah, as they look to march towards a second consecutive final appearance this year.
Bukit Merah captain, Muhammad Aidil (#36), said, “I am satisfied with our performance. The team played unexpectedly well today and I am really happy for them. We passed well, shot the ball more and communication between players improved. We need to improve on chemistry through each line to beat the other teams. We hope to reach the final again and hopefully be champions.”
