Republic Polytechnic, Tuesday, February 18, 2014 — School of Science and Technology (SST) put in a strong performance to take out Hillgrove Secondary 12–2 in the National B Division Floorball Championship.

Godfrey Gan (SST #23) and Joshua Tan (SST #25) led their team with two goals apiece.

SST are now joint-first in Group E, along with East View Secondary and Catholic High, with a 1–0 win-loss record.

SST started the game off in a patient manner. Their players slowly probed the Hillgrove defence, waiting for gaps to open before decisively exploiting them. This resulted in a couple of quality shots on goal, but SST were unable to score. Both teams went through their line changes frequently, as both coaches looked to keep fresh legs in the game. Enoch Yang (SST #2) provided the breakthrough for his team, calmly slotting the ball into the net after a good build-up play from his teammates. SST continued their momentum, scoring a further five goals in the period. Bacus Lee (Hillgrove #58) pulled one back for Hillgrove, scoring off the rebound after a free hit.

The second period saw fatigue set into the Hillgrove team, who dressed only eight players for the match. They could not catch a break at all in this period, even picking up a foul that left them down to four players on court for two minutes. SST continuously attacked the Hillgrove goal, making life miserable for the Hillgrove keeper. SST finished the period up 10–1.

Hillgrove continued their resistance in their final period, showing perseverance in spite of the odds stacked against them. They managed to pull another goal back, with Yong Kang (Hillgrove #3) taking advantage of a napping SST defence to score. From this point on, SST upped the pressure on defence. They furiously pursued the ball, napping at the heels of Hillgrove players. They maintained their dominance to the end, finishing 12–2 and securing their opening match win.

SST captain, Enoch Yang (#2), said, “I think we did very well today. We’ve been improving each time and managed to outplay the other team. I think we did well to move into space, communicate with each other and creating chances. We have to improve our confidence, as we need it to take on the other teams. We aim to qualify for the quarter-finals, but we will take it one step at a time.”
