Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, February 19, 2014 — Jurong West Secondary picked up a 45–43 win against School of Science and Technology (SST) in the second round of the West Zone B Division Boys Basketball Championship.

Dexter Tan (Jurong West #6) led all scorers with 16 points, while Pang Cheng Feng (#4) and Denzel Supriyadi (#5) had 9 points apiece for SST.

In the first quarter, SST raced out to a 12–4 lead early on. Their players were making their open jumpers, punishing Jurong West for being lax on defence. Defensively, SST’s 2-3 zone worked effectively, deterring Jurong West from driving into the paint. This had the effect of unnerving the Jurong West players, as they looked tentative and passive while swinging the ball around the perimeter. Towards the end, something clicked for Jurong West. They scored three quick points to end the quarter, cutting the deficit to 11–19.

The match slowed to a crawl in the second quarter, as both teams were unable to make their mark offensively. Jurong West took a lot of shots, but were unable to convert them. Sloppy passing on their end also gifted the ball to SST on a couple of occasions. SST showcased a nice offensive play to create open corner three-pointers. The quarter ended with SST holding a 24–16 lead.

Jurong West came out looking more stable in the third quarter. Even in the face of a very active SST defence, Jurong West went on a 14–0 run to snatch the lead from SST. SST had a hard time driving in the paint, as they were shut out by Jurong West. They resorted to attempting three-pointers from the corner, but none of them went in.

The fourth quarter saw both teams change up their strategy in a bid to secure the win. Jurong West elected not to crash the offensive boards, as they were content with maintaining their lead. SST’s defence tightened up down the stretch, as they attempted to fight back.

With SST down four points and just 30 seconds left to play, Denzel (SST #5) made a three-pointer to trim the deficit. Dexter (Jurong West #6) was fouled on the next possession, sending him to the free throw line. He made one of two, putting the ball in SST’s possession with six seconds left. Unfortunately, Ryan Pek (SST #10) fumbled and turned the ball over. This allowed Jurong West to run out the clock, holding on to win 45–43.

Jurong West captain, Benjamin Ang (#13), said, “We have been training really hard over the holidays, I think we could have performed better than this. Our players are not at our peak form yet. I am confident of us making top four in the zone. We need to communicate more and talk things out and this will help us.”

Dexter Tan (Jurong West #6) added, “We would like to take the opportunity to thank our coaches, teachers and schoolmates for all their support.”
