Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, February 21, 2014 — Bukit Panjang Government High (BP) put in a strong display to take out Bukit Batok Secondary (BBS) 80–39 in the second round of the West Zone B Division Boys Basketball Championship. Jerald Goh (BP #13) had 20 points to lead Bukit Panjang in scoring, while Vignesh (BP #11) added 16 points. Clarence Ngay (BBS #8) had 11 points to pace his team.
Vignesh (BP #11) was strong from the start, making aggressive drives to the hoop on offence. His mentality rewarded him well, drawing a couple of fouls from Bukit Batok. Not to be outdone, Bukit Batok matched Bukit Panjang bucket for bucket throughout the first quarter. This allowed them to trail only by four.
The second quarter saw Bukit Panjang build upon their lead. Bukit Batok took plenty of ill-advised shots, resulting in misses. Their scores came in dribs and drabs, while Bukit Panjang’s steady offence stretched the lead to 19.
Bukit Batok attempted to come back in the third quarter, firing at will from three-point land. This did not play out well, as they missed most of their attempts. They also tried to be more physical on defence, but they still allowed Bukit Panjang to cut into the paint easily.
Bukit Panjang ran out on a 16–0 run to start the fourth quarter, which helped put the game away for good. They were relentless on the boards, not allowing Bukit Batok any opportunity at all. They sealed the 80–39 win, putting them in pole position to qualify top of their group for the semi-final.
Bukit Panjang captain, Dini Matin (#8), commented, “I think we played quite badly. We were a little complacent and our defence was slack. We need to improve our on-court communication so we can perform better as a team.”
