Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, February 21, 2014 — Kranji Secondary used a strong fourth quarter to defeat Assumption English School (AES) 40–32 in the second round of the B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.
Nabilah Bte Alfian (Kranji #8) led all scorers with a game-high 17 points.
The first quarter was back and forth between both teams. Assumption English left the paint exposed, allowing Kranji easy drives to the basket. This allowed Kranji to grab the early lead.
In the second quarter, slow ball movement on the part of Assumption English cost them a few possessions. They continue to allow Kranji into the paint easily, but were let off by poor finishing from the Kranji players.
The third quarter saw both teams pull even toward the end. Assumption English bullied their way to the lead, muscling their way in their post for easy shot attempts. After being passive the whole quarter, Kranji went on a 6–0 run to tie things up at 23 as the quarter buzzer sounded.
Kranji started the final quarter with an 8–0 run, fueled by good fast breaks. Their steady offence throughout the quarter allowed them to maintain a comfortable 11-point lead. They also did well on defence, double teaming the Assumption English center. They forced her into a lot of misses, stagnating the Assumption English offence. Assumption English further compounded their misery, giving up on rebounds too easily. This cost them the game, as they eventually went down 32–40 to Kranji.
Kranji captain, Nabilah (#8), commented, “We were complacent at the start, but we came back fighting. We must learn not to rush our game, as most of us become panicky very easily.”
