vision 2030 live better through sports

Lin Qingyi, 28, is part of the current national netball squad and if all goes as planned, she will get to play for Singapore at the next Southeast Asian (SEA) Games scheduled to be held in Singapore in June 2015. This is the first time that Netball will feature in the biennial Games since 2001.

Singapore finished second behind Uganda at the 2013 Netball Nations Cup and took home the Asian Championships in Sri Lanka in the same year.

We caught up with Lin Qingyi at the Singapore 2015 launch party recently to find out more.

Red Sports: How do you feel about Netball being in the SEA Games in 2015?
Qingyi: I think it’s something that we’ve really wanted to do for a long time, but didn’t have the opportunity to. In other countries, netball might not be a priority. So we are very happy and excited to note that Netball will be in the 2015 SEA Games.

What do you think about representing Singapore at the SEA Games in the home ground?
Qingyi: It is definitely going to be a great feeling to be in the presence of a local crowd that supports us.

What will the national team be looking forward to this year?
Qingyi: We are currently training for the Asian Netball Championships which we will be held in September (at the Singapore Indoor Stadium).

What do you hope to achieve in the 2015 SEA Games?
Qingyi: At the moment, it’s still too early to tell. But hopefully, we would want to go for a win. But we will take one game at a time because the teams in this region are improving.

Who would you say would be our strongest competitor in the SEA Games?
Qingyi: I guess in this region, Malaysia would be our strongest competition. We met them in the Nations Cup last year, and the scoreline has been getting closer a lot over the years.
