Anglican High School, Tuesday, February 25, 2014 — Anglican High School (AHS) defeated Tanjong Katong Secondary School (TK) 75–59 in the semi-finals to qualify for the final East Zone B Division Boys Basketball Championship.

The two teams last met in the first round of the competition, with Anglican High winning 64–28. Anglican High have defeated all teams so far in the East Zone B Division Boys Championship.

This is the first time that Tanjong Katong have secured a spot in the East Zone top four, thus qualifying for the National Championship.

Shawn Toh (Anglican High #6) scored a game-high 32 points, while Whilce Umandap (Tanjong Katong #13) put in a team-high 16 points.

Both teams took time to warm up their game, missing a number of easy shots at the start. Five minutes into the game, the score was level at 9–9. Following that, Shawn Toh (Anglican High #6) stepped up his game and became a threat to Tanjong Katong offensively.

Anglican High gradually pulled away towards the end of the first quarter with Shawn (#6) taking the lead to drive up to the basket and converting efficiently. Anglican High were also ripping down the offensive boards, giving themselves second-chance points as they reset their plays. They led 21–14 going into the second quarter.

Tanjong Katong had a few offensive rebounds in the second quarter but their efforts came to naught as they could not convert their underbasket shots. Lai Hao Qian (Anglican High #5) netted a 3-pointer towards the end of the second quarter. Following that he scored on a fast break and used a quick drive to the basket to total seven points.

In the third quarter, Shawn (Anglican High #6) seemed to have lost his touch as he missed several underbasket shots, and mishandled the ball on fast breaks. However he came back in the final minutes of the quarter to contribute eight points.

On the other hand, Whilce Umandap (Tanjong Katong #13) was the key for his team in the third quarter, pacing their offensive plays and taking composed shots to add on points to the score sheet.

Both teams engaged in fast-paced plays in the final minutes, trying to score as much as possible. Tanjong Katong were playing the chasing game and employed a full-court press, putting pressure on Anglican High and hoping to force turnovers.

Despite that, Anglican High managed to overcome the pressure with good team communication. They went on a scoring outburst which proved too much for Tanjong Katong, winning 75–59 to secure a spot in the final.

Anglican High captain, Shawn Toh (#6), said, “We were planning to engage more fastbreaks and to have an aggressive defense. I think TK #9 (Muhammad Naqib Bin Borhan) was quite difficult to defend because he is quite tall. We hope to win the final and make our school proud.”

Tanjong Katong captain, Naqib (#9), said, “We played better than the last time we faced Anglican High. Our scoring is much better. I think everyone was not afraid to take shots today, which was good. We are aiming for nationals top eight.”

Anglican High now face Dunman on Tuesday, March 4, at Anglican High School at 3.20pm.
