Anglican High School, Tuesday, March 4, 2014 — Dunman Secondary needed the calm shooting of Putri Nur Syazwani (Dunman #15) to emerge champions of the East Zone B Division Girls Basketball Championship. She scored a three-pointer with two seconds left to help her team beat Anglican High 50–48.
Nur Khaliesah (Dunman #6) led all scorers with 13 points, while Amelie Lim (Anglican #8) paced her team with 10 points.
This is Dunman’s third consecutive zonal championship since 2012. They will now move on to the National Championships in hopes of defending their national title.
Dunman started the game on a 6–0 run to take an early lead. Anglican High were plagued by bad ball movement on offence, leading to turnovers that Dunman capitalised on. Anglican High’s defence was all over the place toward the end of the quarter. This allowed Dunman to exploit the space and claim offensive rebounds.
The second quarter saw Dunman play a tight man-to-man defence. This disrupted Anglican High’s rhythm, making them miss their shots. Dunman had offensive woes of their own, but Kattbeya (Dunman #5) was able to break their scoring drought with a three-pointer. Dunman went into the half-time break up 23–15, with their supporters cheering them on boisterously.
Anglican High started to turn the game back in their favour in the third quarter. Dunman started to miss their jumpers on offence and Anglican High took advantage of that by trimming the deficit in a methodical manner. Good ball movement and close shots to the basket drove Anglican High’s run, cutting the lead to five by the end of the quarter.
Amelie Lim (AHS #8) made one free throw to tie the game at 44 apiece with four minutes left in the final quarter. From that point on, it was a tense affair as each made basket was followed by raucous cheering from the crowd.
Navanee Lingam (AHS #12) helped Anglican take a one-point lead with about 10 seconds left, making one crucial free throw. This prompted Dunman to take a time-out, drawing up one final play in a bid to take the win. The ensuing inbounds play was a thing of beauty, as Putri (Dunman #5) was able to spot up at the 45-degree with acres of space. She buried the three-pointer with ease, sending the Dunman supporters into a frenzy. After one last defensive stop, Dunman were able to seal their third consecutive East Zone title, winning 50–48.
Dunman captain, Putri Nur Syazwani (#15), said, “I am really happy and proud of the team. We persevered throughout the game, even when we relinquished the lead late in the fourth quarter. We hope to make the national finals and we will do out best to get there.”
Anglican captain, Amelie Lim (#8), said, “I think that it was a really well-played game. My team fought really hard and we did the best we could. It was really heartwarming to have the support of so many people. We have learned a lot today and though we lost, I believe that we’ll rise up from this fall to be stronger than ever before and bring glory to our school.”
