PESEB, Monday, March 3, 2014 — CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) defeated Zhonghua Secondary School 76–64 in the semi-final to qualify for the final of South Zone B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.
Jayne Chan (CHIJ #12) led all scorers with 49 points, while teammate Desiree Lee (CHIJ #14) had 16 points. Zhonghua (#5) led her team with 29 points.
In the first quarter, the game was fairly intense with multiple lead changes. Zhonghua (#7) managed to score a three-pointer to beat the buzzer, ending the first quarter with a one-point Zhonghua lead at 15–14.
This close margin continued on for the second and third quarters. No team had the upper hand as there were multiple lead changes.
CHIJ encountered a scary moment midway through the third quarter, when Desiree (CHIJ #14) sustained a head injury through a collision.
In the final quarter, CHIJ appeared to have a sudden boost of confidence, as Jayne (CHIJ #12) poured in 11 straight points to secure the lead. Desiree (#14) also managed to return to the court. The duo of Jayne and Desiree was too much to handle for Zhonghua as CHIJ sealed the game 76–64.
Desiree (CHIJ #14) commented, “I felt that the game was intense and we were all nervous the night before the game. I felt that the team had done well. We must overcome our nervousness to perform better.”
Jayne (CHIJ #12) added, “As a team, we did well and had adequate teamwork as compared to the rest of the matches. I think that communication in the team can be improved. I felt that our opponents were relatively competitive too. We will do our best in the finals against SCGS and most importantly, enjoy the game.”
CHIJ (Toa Payoh) will take on Singapore Chinese Girls’ School in the final, which will be played on Thursday, March 6, at Jurong East Sports Hall.
