Jurong East Sports and Recreation Centre, Tuesday, March 6, 2014 — Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) put on a masterful defensive display to defeat CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) 68–23 in the final of the South Zone B Division Girls Basketball Championship. Charmaine Koh (SCGS #13) led all scorers with 19 points, while Jayne Chan (CHIJ #12) paced her team with 14 points.

This was SCGS’s fifth consecutive zonal title since 2010. This is the first time they have faced CHIJ (Toa Payoh) in the final.

SCGS started the game on an 11–0 run, putting themselves in a comfortable position. They were able to dominate the boards, as the CHIJ(TP) players failed to box out each time. Bernice (SCGS #4) and Charmaine (SCGS #13) provided the firepower early on, accounting for 13 of their team’s points in the quarter.

After putting up 49 points in the semi-final, all eyes were on Jayne Chan (CHIJ(TP) #12) to help spark her team to victory. SCGS were having none of that, they put a dedicated defender to man mark Jayne (CHIJ(TP) #12) throughout the game. This proved to be effective, as she was limited to 14 total points in the game.

Without their key player, CHIJ(TP)’s offence sputtered horribly. They were unable to get penetration into the paint and resorted to forcing shots which missed horribly. SCGS were able to take a commanding 30–point lead into the half-time break.

The third quarter saw very little scoring on both sides. SCGS were content with maintaining the lead and ensuring that Jayne (CHIJ(TP) #12) was not able to get into her scoring rhythm.

With the game well out of reach for CHIJ(TP) in the final quarter, SCGS were able to send in their bench to finish off the match. They proved to be as good as the main team, outscoring CHIJ (TP) 17–2 in the final quarter. SCGS sealed the championship with a 68–23 scoreline, putting them in good stead before they start their national campaign.

SCGS captain, Rachel Mok (#6), said, “I am very happy that we were able to win the zonal championship. We worked very hard and trained hard for this. We were able to follow our coach’s instructions throughout the match and also focus on our game. We hope to claim the national championship next.”
