Jurong East Sports Complex, Friday, March 7, 2014 – Nanyang Girls’ High School (NYGH) defeated Methodist Girls’ School (MGS) 27-26 to take home the West Zone C Division Netball Championship.
In 2012, MGS were the overall zonal champions while Nanyang Girls’ High were third.
The colourful crowd with their supporters signs, flag-waving and clapping lifted the atmosphere in Jurong East Sports Hall as their school chants vibrated around the court.
Nanyang started strongly to give themselves a 8–3 lead after the opening quarter.
Keen to narrow the gap, MGS displayed relentless pressure on the Nanyang defence, especially in the goal-third where they forced their opponents to decide on their options. The several interceptions made by The MGS Goal Keeper Sabine Wong and successful shots by their Goal Shooter, Amandeep Kaur, contributed greatly to the nine goals MGS scored. They eventually caught up and trailed only by two (12–14) at half-time.
The defenses from both side held strong and prevented the other from scoring with ease. However, it was Nanyang that had the slim edge going into the fourth quarter, with a 21-18 lead.
The final quarter was the most intense as MGS continued to give their opponents a strong fight till the final whistle, trying their best to upset Nanyang’s flow and composure in the final quarter. Despite their valiant efforts, they could not overhaul the deficit, leaving Nanyang to seal the game 27–26.
Nanyang Girls’ High teachers, Ms Chia Hui Ping and Ms Tan Wei Lin, commented on the pressure faced in keeping up with the titles. “We emphasize on the importance of the process over the result. It was definitely a blessing and a bonus to win.”
