Physical Education and Sports Education Branch, Friday, March 7, 2014 — Evergreen Secondary beat Admiralty Secondary 50–10 in a final group game in the National B Division Rugby Championship.
Evergreen topped their group with this win and have won all their four preliminary games. The loss meant Admiralty finished fourth in the group with a 1–3 win-loss record and they missed out on the semi-finals.
Early in the game, Muhammad Ariffin (Evergreen #8) scored a try to put the team 5–0 up. In another offensive play, Mohamad Shafik (Evergreen #11) sprinted from one end of the field to reach the other, leaving his defenders behind to score a try. Aqiil B Hasbullah (#10) also made one to total three tries from the Evergreen side. Ariffin (#8) had two conversions in the first half.
On the other hand, Admiralty’s Abdul Malik (#24) and Muhammad Syafawi (#36) stepped up their game to score a try each. Admiralty were putting in good effort but could not overcome their defenders.
By the end of first half, Evergreen led 19–10.
Evergreen continued their impressive game in the second half. Players from the team took turns to score tries and Ariffin (#8) put in a few more conversions to wrap up a 50–10 win over Admiraly.
Ariffin (#8) of Evergreen was nominated for the Fair Play Award as he helped an Admiralty opponent when he got injured.
Evergreen captain, Ariffin (#8) said, “I feel that we were not ready in the first half. We got our heads into the game in the second half and played better, but it was still not our best game this season. I think we have improved a lot since last year, and even managed to beat the champions of last year’s bowl, Peirce Secondary.”
Admiralty captain, Ajwad (#32) said, “I feel that we played well as a team. We took our responsibility and it was a great game with Evergreen. Though Evergreen are at the top of the table, we feel honoured as we did well. This is our last game and the graduating students did well. I guess it is natural to give our best in this game. Although we lost I felt happy to play with them.”
Evergreen will face Regent Secondary in one of the bowl semi-finals while Jurong Secondary will take on Peirce Secondary in the other.
