Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), March 12, Wednesday, 2014 — Hwa Chong Institution shrugged off a shaky first half performance to beat Saint Andrew’s Junior College 10–4 in the National A Division Boys Water Polo Championship. Samuel Yu (HCI #12) led all scorers with five goals while Valam (SAJC #4) paced his team with four goals.

Saint Andrew’s kept the game competitive early in the first quarter. Valam (SAJC #4) scored to tie the game at 1–1 after Wen Bin (HCI #9) opened the scoring. Saint Andrew’s made a fight of it, until Hwa Chong scored two goals to round off the quarter.

Valam (SAJC #4) then scored again in the second quarter to cut the lead to one. SAJC looked strong in the quarter, but Hwa Chong kept their nerve to maintain the lead. A penalty by Samuel (HCI #12) helped restore Hwa Chong’s lead.

The third quarter saw Hwa Chong break away in the game, as they put five past the SAJC keeper. SAJC’s defence was adequate in the quarter, but they were simply beat by a better Hwa Chong offence each time.

The final quarter saw Valam (SAJC #4) score another two goals, but they weren’t enough to lift his team to the win. Hwa Chong ended the game 10–4 winners.

Hwa Chong captain, Darren Wang (#8), said, “I am happy that we got the win, but this was not our best performance. We believe will perform better in the coming games. This was our first competitive match together and we had some initial nerves. It was all down to the belief and trust we had in each other. Our tangible goal is to win this championship, but at the same time, grow and develop together as a team.”
