B Division Rugby St. Andrew’s vs Raffles Institution

The Grandstand, Tuesday, March 25, 2014 — St. Andrew’s Secondary battled in the drizzle to defeat Raffles Institution 22–10 in the National B Division Rugby Championship.

In the first half, St. Andrew’s scored two tries through Austin Ng (#1) and Viviyan Philip (#13), but failed to make both conversions as the kicks fell short.

For Raffles, they fought hard to earn a penalty which they easily scored, thereafter scoring a try and converting to make it 10–10 midway through the first half. Both sides tried to break out of the tie, executing fluid passes and going on good runs, but were always stopped.

However, towards the end of the first half, St. Andrew’s offensive efforts were rewarded when Bernard The (#9) scored a try when he outran his opponents to slam the ball down. A conversion gave St. Andrew’s the 17–10 lead going into the break.

In the second half, Raffles tried to force a comeback but to no avail against a determined St. Andrew’s. St. Andrew’s Gareth Chem (#21) then scored the fourth try of the game to ensure his team finished 22–10 winners.

With this win, St. Andrew’s currently hold a 3-1 win-loss record, and will take on St. Joseph’s Institution in their final group game.

Raffles Institution hold a 1-3 win-loss record, and will face Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) next.

St. Andrew’s vice-captain, Zulfadli (#30), said, “Raffles were the better side in the first half. St. Andrew’s woke up late. We weren’t focused during the game in the beginning, but came back due to the influence of a few players. Raffles were trailing 17–10 at halftime, but still fought throughout the whole game. Overall I think both sides played well and it was a good game.”
