Republic Polytechnic, Saturday, March 29, 2014 — Republic Polytechnic (RP) broke away in the final minute of the game to defeat Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) 25–24 in the semi-final of the Tertiary Tchoukball Championship.
Leading up to the semi-finals, Republic Polytechnic topped group A with three straight wins against ITE, SMU and NUS in the preliminary round. Nanyang Polytechnic on the other hand had a 2-1 win-loss record, after beating NTU and SIM in group B. They lost to SP in the group game.
Royston Ng (RP #3) and Alvin Lim (NYP #5) registered a game-high eight points each.
Both sides appeared to be evenly-matched in the first half, as the teams took turns to score points on every possession. The first half ended with a tie (14–14).
The second half continued to be closely played, with points for each team coming one after the other. Not more than two points separated the teams at any one time, until NYP pulled away to a three-point lead (20–17) with Alvin Lim’s (NYP #5) shot.
However, RP scored three points straight to level at 20–20.
Eng Kang Shun (NYP #6) was crucial for NYP in the final minutes, stepping up his defence to dive for the rebound on several occasions to keep the scores close. With one minute left, the scores were tied at 23-23. A goal each from RP and NYP made it 24-24.
Teenesh S/O Thanabalan (RP #11) scored the crucial last goal to lift the team 25–24 over NYP to claim a spot in the final.
