Clementi Sports Hall, Thursday, April 3, 2014 — Nanyang Girls’ High (NYGH) took out Anglican High (AHS) 34–21 in their final group game of the National B Division Girls Basketball Championship.

Lim Boon Yee (#12) and Charmian Cheah (#13) led Nanyang Girls’ with six points each, while Amelie Lim (#8) contributed a game-high nine points for Anglican High. With the victory, Nanyang Girls’ topped their group with a 3–0 win-loss record. Anglican High’s season ended with a third place finish in the group with a 1–2 win-loss record.

Immediately after the tip-off, Jaslyn Koh (#9) put up the first points for Anglican High with an easy drive in the paint. Boon Yee (NYGH #12) responded on the opposite end with a quick underbasket of her own. Nanyang Girls’ were quick on the defensive end, denying Anglican High any driving opportunities. Each time an Anglican High player attempted to drive into the paint, she faced a strong double-team from the Nanyang Girls’ defenders. A pair of free throws from Amelie (AHS #8) forced a 6–6 tie to end the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Nanyang Girls’ displayed excellent offensive and defensive plays to outscore Anglican High 16–6. Anglican High found no way to penetrate the Nanyang Girls’ defence as they were often forced to settle for tough shots from long range.

Throughout the third quarter, Nanyang Girls’ had trouble converting easy opportunities. They made it up on the defensive end, holding Anglican High to just four points.

Holding a comfortable 14-point lead, Nanyang Girls’ fielded most of their reserves in the final quarter. Anglican High seized the opportunity to minimize the lead. Amelie (AHS #8) contributed four straight points, including a buzzer-beating jumper, but it was not enough as Nanyang Girls’ bagged the 34–21 victory.

Nanyang Girls’ captain, Sheryl Ng (#4), commented, “I think this game was better than our first two games. Our focus today was on our defence, which would help us win and top the group. For the upcoming games, we have to work on converting our fast break attempts, and also learn to prevent injuries.”
