Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, April 7, 2014 — Anglican High School (AHS) staged a late comeback to defeat Raffles Institution (RI) 64–57 in the final group game of the National B Division Boys Basketball Championship to top their Round 1 group.
Before this game, Raffles and Anglican High both held a 2–0 win-loss record. With this win, Anglican High top the group with three straight wins to go into the second round. Raffles also qualified for round two of the National Championship.
Randall Fang (AHS #11) paced his team with 17 points, while Justin Yeo (RI #10) had a game-high 19 points.
The first quarter was especially fast-paced as both teams ran fast breaks at every opportunity. Raffles and Anglican High appeared to be evenly-matched and they kept exchanging leads throughout the quarter. Anglican High took on a slight 23–22 lead going into the second quarter.
Anglican High played condensed defence in the second quarter, forcing Raffles to take shots outside the perimeter. However, Raffles were especially accurate and nailed most of their jumpers.
On the other hand, Anglican High were faced with foul troubles as Shawn Toh (#6) and Li Chuan (#10) picked up their third personal foul when the second quarter ended. Raffles led 36–32 going into the hal-ftime break.
Al Khalifa (AHS #14) played a huge part in Anglican High’s defensive game in the third quarter, as he was threatening in the paint with his defensive efforts and shot blocks. He also went up against his defenders in the game to convert several underbasket shots.
For Raffles, Justin Yeo (#10) was impressive offensively, going up for offensive rebounds and converting effortlessly. He also drove into the paint to add points to the scoreboard. Despite that, it was not enough as Anglican High trailed by a mere point going into the final quarter (46–47).
Randall Fang (AHS #11) sank a 3-point jumper at the start of the last quarter to take back the lead (49–47). Raffles and Anglican High took turns to score and the scoreline remained close. Midway into the final quarter, Raffles threatened a comeback but Anglican High were able preserve their lead. Anglican High’s good team chemistry in the final minutes allowed them end the game 64–57 winners.
Raffles captain, Jovi (#11) said, “We knew it was a 50-50 game and were planning to try our best since we are trying to get to the top of the group. We started off well and we were leading. However, in the third quarter we couldn’t really find our shots and allowed them to catch up to us.”
Anglican High captain, Shawn Toh (#6), said, “We are very happy. In the first part of the game, we did our defence badly and didn’t make a lot of shots. However, in the second half we started to score more and our defence was more aggressive.”
