Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, April 9, 2014 — Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) led from start to finish to beat Dunman High School (DHS) 72–12 in their opening game of the National A Division Girls Basketball Championship.

Freda Chua (HCI #7) registered a game-high 16 points, while Shiying (DHS #4) and Stella (DHS #7) had five points each.

HCI dominated from the start with good fast break runs, scoring effortlessly on layups. Defensively they also managed to shut out DHS’s attacking plays, and as such DHS only managed to put in two points through Stella (#7) in the first half.

After the halftime break, HCI played with good team chemistry, rotating the ball fluidly on the perimeter, then finding their unguarded teammates in the paint. Jamie (DHS #8) managed to stop a few plays with her interceptions, fighting against HCI’s dominance with good defensive efforts on her part. However it was not enough to stop her opponents’ scoring streak.

Freda Chua (HCI #7) pulled down most of the offensive and defensive boards, and also converted efficiently to pace her team’s game. Threatened by their opponents’ defence, DHS chose to take shots outside the paint, but they just did not fall. HCI led throughout the game to claim their first win of the season (72–12).

HCI captain, Chu Yin (#6) said, “I think offensively we did okay, because we scored on fast breaks. We tried different types of defences today and I think we did okay for this is our first game. We will work harder for our next game. I think our strongest opponents this year are RI and NYJC.”
