Physical Education and Sports Education Branch, Thursday, April 10, 2014 — Raffles Institution (RI) defeated Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC) 36–3 in the first round of the A Division Boys Rugby Championship.

RI were beaten by ACS(I) in their opening game, while this is ACJC’s first game in round one.

RI played an aggressive game from the start and ran for every loose ball. They also dominated with their line-out possessions. Park Chang Kyu (RI #18) scored the first try of the game, while Maverick Lim (#10) converted to put their team 7–0 up. Muhammad Syahid (RI #6) had the second try. Maverick (RI #10) followed up with another conversion to give RI the 14–0 lead.

For ACJC, Putra Danish (#9) moved swiftly and in a good run, managed to get past three defenders. However, thereafter he was tackled and brought down by his RI opponents. Towards the end of the game, ACJC were awarded a penalty. Jaren Heng (#10) took the chance and successfully converted to trail 3–14 going into the halftime break.

In the second half, the duo of Maverick (RI #10) and Kyle Chong (RI #15) played a crucial role during attacks, distributing the ball to their teammates and initiating runs.

Ryan Sek (RI #21) scored the third try for his team. In another impressive offensive play, Ho Yishu (RI #8) was running straight for the goal line when he was brought to the ground by ACJC. Chia Wei Shern (RI #2) then got the ball and found Shreyas Babu (RI #24), who slammed the ball down to score a try.

RI played with good defensive efforts in the second half, tackling the ACJC runners whenever they were within reach. Towards the end of the game, Yishu (RI #8) and Maverick (RI #10) registered a try each to finish with a 36–3 win. RI had six try-scorers in this game and followed up with three conversions.

RI captain, Maverick (#10), said, “I feel that this was a big step out from the first game. Coming into this game we were very low in morale, but today we showed up with great confidence and played a better game. It was a better match all together. I think from today’s match on we won’t take a step back anymore. We will work on having more confidence and team work.”
