Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Monday, April 14, 2014 — Dylan Wong of Singapore Sports School hopped, stepped and jumped to a new meet record distance of 14.27 metres on his fifth attempt at the 55th National Inter-School Track & Field Championships to finish first in the boys’ B Division triple jump event.

Joseph Johnathan Zhao of Hwa Chong Institution came in second with a distance of 13.64m, while Justin Lee of Raffles Institution finished third with 13.62m.

Sports School’s Dylan was leading after three jumps with his third attempt of 13.95m. Justin followed in second place at 13.62m, while Joseph was third with his attempt of 13.35m.

Dylan’s massive jump of 14.27m on his fifth try placed him at the top of the field. He was the only jumper thus far who made it past the 14-metre mark. He had also jumped ahead of the record of 14.20m, which was set by Sports School alumnus, Benjamin Ong, in 2012.

In the sixth and final round of attempts, Joseph overtook Justin’s second position with his new best of 13.64m. Justin jumped next, but it was a failed attempt and his best distance was 13.62m from his third jump.

“I’m happy and would like to thank my school and the other competitors. I would try to break this record next year,” said Dylan, who is competing in the B Division triple jump event at the National Championships for the first time.

His 14.27m-jump, with a tailwind of 1.0 metres per second, is a new personal best. It is a huge improvement on his previous wind-legal PB of 13.21m set last month.

Dylan also finished second in the long jump on April 8th.
