Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), Wednesday, April 16, 2014 – Raffles Institution (RI) defeated Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) (ACSI) 15–0 in the first match up between the two favourites to win the National A Division Softball Championship.
For RI, this is their third win in a row and they have a perfect 3–0 win-loss record. This is the first loss for ACS(I) and they drop to 3–1. Both teams are through to the semi-finals. There are five A Division teams playing in a round-robin group and the top four will move into the semi-finals.
RI shut out ACS(I)’s offence with pitcher Edward (#54) getting six strikes out and a fly out. Irwan (#8) was the only ACS(I) player to get on base in the game when Thiviya (RI #56), who came in to close the game, gave him a walk. However, Thiviya got a ground out and a strike out from the next two ACS(I) batters to end the game.
RI started with a quick 3 up 3 down in the top of the first inning. RI’s strong offence saw them score 12 runs in the first inning, with Joshua (RI #61) hitting an RBI triple and a three-run home run in the same inning.
ACS(I) were unable to respond in the second inning and RI piled on three more runs to extend their lead to 15–0 to end the game on the mercy rule.
Captain Daniel (RI #3) said the pitchers played well and gave a special mention to Joshua (RI #61) for hitting a triple and a home run.
Joshua (RI #61) said, “The game started out well compared to previous games that weren’t that good. This game exploded.”
Jerel (ACSI #17) said, “The game was quite bad. We weren’t playing our best and we made a lot of errors. That’s why we lost.”
