Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Wednesday, April 16, 2014 — Singapore Sports School led from start to finish to clinch first place in the boys’ B Division 4x400m relay at the 55th National Inter-School Track & Field Championships.
The quartet of Mohd Irfan Qabeel, Muhammad Shahrieza, Jay Choo and Gary Wee clocked a time of 3 minutes 32.89 seconds to claim the title.
The meet record is held by Raffles Institution, who raced to a 3:26.55 in 2003 to set the mark.
RI came in second in a time of 3:35.00, while Hwa Chong Institution rounded out the podium finishing 0.83 seconds behind.
SSP’s Irfan Qabeel said, “It was really amazing to win. It was all about teamwork and our friendship with each other.”
Shahrieza added, “The heat timings for all the teams were pretty close, but we managed to get together and secure the win.”
Hwa Chong, who a year ago had surrendered their overall B Division Championship title to Sports School for the first time in 23 years, clung on to second place in the divisional race. Their third-placed finish in the 4x400m relay, the final event of the meet, enabled them to pip RI by a point to finish as runners-up in the Boys’ B division. SSP were repeat champions, scoring 56 points more than HCI.
