Yio Chu Kang Sports Hall, Monday, April 21, 2014 — Raffles Girls’ School (RGS) led throughout the game to defeat Singapore Sports School (SSP) 35–17 in the 3rd-placing match of the National B Division Girls Netball Championship.

In the first quarter, it was 1–1 when SSP began to make poor passes which were easily intercepted by their opponents. With good ball movement round the court, RGS capitalized on SSP’s mistakes to take a 10–4 lead at the end of the first quarter.

SSP’s Centre played a pivotal role for her team in the second quarter with her good ball distribution, moving fluidly around the court to find ways to feed the Goal Shooter and Goal Attack, setting them up for shots. Midway through the second quarter, SSP caught up to trail 8–11, but good team effort from RGS allowed them to pull away again. They dominated with a 7–2 scoring run towards the end to lead 18–10 going into the halftime break.

In the second half, both teams employed tight defence which led to several turnovers. The first point was scored only three minutes into the third quarter, when SSP’s Centre found the Goal Attack with a neat pass, who then followed up to convert effortlessly. The Goal Attack totalled five points in the second half.

RGS continued to dominate the court, playing their game with fast and accurate passes. Offensively, they had no trouble finding their Goal Shooter in the circle, who converted at the net to constantly add points onto the scoreboard. They also went for every loose ball. RGS outscored SSP 17–7 in the second half to end the game 35–17 winners.

RGS clinched third with this win. This is an improvement as they failed to make it to nationals top four last year.

RGS captain, Yan Yan, said, “We wanted to end our season off well, so I think we managed to do it. We were able to sustain our energy and high spirits throughout the four quarters today.”

RGS vice-captain, Julia, added, “I think it was a good game. We hope our juniors would carry on with the bondedness that we had with this team. Our team this year is very close, and we supported each other a lot. So we hope to carry on this way.”
