Singapore Sports School, Tuesday, April 22, 2014 — At the 55th National Schools Swimming Championships, Wong Fu Kang of Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) finished his B Division 200m individual medley final in 2 minutes 8.67 seconds to claim gold.

Fu Kang bettered the previous meet record of 2:09.13 set by fellow Malaysian Lim Ching Hwang in 2013.

Singapore Sports School’s Ryan Wee came in five seconds later to clinch second in a new personal best of 2:13.97, while Raffles Institution’s Jerome Sunil Kwang was third with 2:16.77.

Fu Kang and Ryan were evenly-matched in the first lap, but the former gradually pulled away in the second lap to lead by over three seconds. The breaststroke specialist improved his advantage on the third, which is swum in his favourite stroke, before finishing the race more than five seconds ahead of the other swimmers to clinch gold.

On his new record, Fu Kang, who took part in the Southeast Asian Games last year, said, “I feel really happy. I’ll continue to train hard and break my personal best.”

The A Division final was a closer race. Singapore Sports School’s Tan Gin Yu clocked a time of 2:11.84 to edge Lim Fang Yi of Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) for gold by just 0.03s. The latter’s teammate Lok Yan Han finished third in 2:13.83.

It was a fierce battle between Gin Yu, Yan Han and Fang Yi in the first three laps as not more than one second separated them at any one time. In the final 50 metres, Gin Yu and Fang Yi pulled away from Yan Han to be the two swimmers still in contention for the gold. Gin Yu, aided by a sub-30s final 50m freestyle, eventually touched home first just ahead of Fang Yi, who clocked a personal best.

Gin Yu said, “I was quite glad and feel really lucky that I actually finished first. I was second even until the last 50 metres. But I managed to catch up, I feel really glad. All the training is not wasted.”

Gin Yu later won his second gold of the day when he came in first in the 200m Butterfly, where he completed the race three seconds earlier than the others to take a convincing win.

On his 200m Butterfly final, he added, “It was quite alright although it’s not my personal best. The competitors were quite good. They make up quite good opponents. Thanks to my opponents and also my coach, Coach Fang.”
