Singapore Sports School, Tuesday, April 22, 2014 — Dynes Quek of Singapore Sports School set a new National Under-14 record in the Boys’ 200 metres Breaststroke with a personal best effort of 2 minutes 27.00 seconds to take home gold at the 55th National Schools Swimming Championship.
The previous age group mark was held by Brilliant Chua when he clocked a time of 2:27.84 at the 36th South-east Asian Age Group Swimming Championships. Dynes smashed the record by 0.84 seconds, and also took a massive three seconds off his 2:30.17 PB.
However, Dynes did not manage to rewrite the C Division meet record of 2:26.50 set by Brilliant in 2013.
Dynes improved on his performance at last year’s Schools’ championships, where he swam in the same event but only managed to finish second with a timing of 2:36.98.
Adam Tan of Raffles Institution came in second with a timing of 2:33.53, while Dylan Siew of Raffles Institution took third with 2:34.36.
Dynes said, “I feel very happy to have set my personal best, three seconds (faster than my previous timing).” When asked on how he would look to improve from here, Dynes commented, “Definitely to train harder and motivate myself more to try and break another record this year. I would like to thank my parents, coach and sports directors in my school for letting me take part and training me.”
