Singapore Sports School, Tuesday, April 22, 2014 — Tan Jing-E of Methodist Girls’ School completed her C Division 200 metres individual medley final in 2 minutes 23.17 seconds at the 55th National Schools Swim Championships to clinch gold.
Jing-E’s timing bettered the previous meet record of 2:24.69 set by Chan Fang Yi in 2012. The 13-year-old has set four national under-14 records this year, with one of them being the 200m IM. Her time of 2:22.58 in last month’s National Age Group Championships broke the 21-year-old mark of 2:23.42 set by 40-time Southeast Asian Games champion Joscelin Yeo.
Daphne Tan of Raffles Girls’ School grabbed the silver in 2:29.34, while Genevieve Lye of Methodist Girls’ School came in third with 2:30.96. Both were personal bests.
Jing-E led throughout the race and increased her lead at every turn. In the battle for second place, Daphne pulled away from Genevieve as the race wore won and eventually finished 1.62 seconds earlier.
“I feel very happy but for my individual medley I think I can improve a lot on my breaststroke because it’s my weakest stroke. And I really want to thank God, my parents, my coaches and my training partners,” said Jing-E.
