Bedok Sports Hall, Monday, April 21, 2014 — Bukit Merah Secondary (BMS) earned a place in the final of the National B Division Girls Floorball Championship after triumphing over Orchid Park Secondary School (OPS) 9–1. Bukit Merah will be defending their title for the second consecutive time.
Jacqlene Ong (#14) led Bukit Merah with a hat trick while Ili Huda (#4) scored the only goal for Orchid Park.
Entering the semi-final, Bukit Merah has been undefeated. They drew first blood through their vice-captain, Jacqlene Ong (BMS #14), who confidently placed the ball at the back of the Orchid Park’s net. Orchid Park had a lot of chances in front of goal but failed to convert the opportunities. Bukit Merah extended their lead to 2–0 through Edlyn Grace (BMS #22) just before the end of the first period.
Bukit Merah continued dominating the match and scored two more goals in the second period. Orchid Park’s strong forward pairing of Ili Huda (OPS #4) and Nur Dini (OPS #27) were able to pass through the Bukit Merah’s defence but their shots were either off-target or were saved by Bukit Merah’s reliable captain and goalkeeper, Shermaine Goh (BMS #52).
In the last period, despite the one-sided scoreline of 4–0, Orchid Park continued to put on a strong fight. Their aggressive play resulted in Wong Che Teng (OPS #23) receiving a two-minute penalty for a hard tackle on Bukit Merah player. Bukit Merah continued on their scoring streak through their vice-captain, Jacqlene (BMS #23). Chew Ho Ying (BMS #7) joined her, scoring the sixth goal for Bukit Merah.
Orchid Park found themselves at an advantage when Jacqlene (BMS #14) received a two-minute penalty for multiple slashings. Orchid Park then converted the advantage and scored their sole goal through their forward, Ili Huda (OPS #4).
However, despite that goal, Bukit Merah continued to dominate in the remainder of the match and scored three more goals through Farhanah (BMS #9), Siti Nurhaliza (BMS #8) and Nur Ellyqa (BMS #20). Bukit Merah eventually emerged 9–1 victors.
On her team’s feat, Orchid Park’s Ili Huda (#4) commented, “It is the first time that we were trying this team combination and I believed that we put up a good fight against Bukit Merah. But we were unfortunate as we were unable to find the back of the net. I am really proud of the team for coming this far as this is the first time we’ve reached the semi-final after awhile.”
Bukit Merah’s 9–1 win over Orchid Park meant that they will be defending the title that they have won since 2012, and also to bring the challenge trophy home.
