Singapore Sports School, Tuesday, April 22, 2014 — Christie Chue of CHIJ Katong Convent completed her C Division 50 metres freestyle final in 27.13 seconds at the 55th National Schools Swimming Championships to clinch first place and set a meet record as well.
It bettered the previous mark of 27.24s, which was set by Ruth Ho, then of Singapore Sports School, back in 2006. It also equaled her personal best which she first swam exactly a month ago at the Singapore National Age Group Championships. The time is 0.24s off Joscelin Yeo’s 21-year-old national under-14 record of 26.89s.
“I’ve been working very hard for it. I never thought of breaking it in the first place. So it’s actually a happy moment for me that I broke the record,” Christie said.
Christie also swam a time of 33.77s to claim gold in the 50m breaststroke final, missing Samantha Yeo’s 2011 meet record by 0.20 seconds, as well as the latter’s national under-14 mark by 0.24s.
When asked about her achievement in the 50m breaststroke, she added, “I will continue to work hard and try to break the record in the next meet. I’ll try to train more frequently.”
Chan Zi Yi of Methodist Girls’ School clinched silver in the 50m freestyle in 27.75 seconds, while Kimberly Ong of Singapore Sports School finished third in 27.96 seconds.
