Singapore Basketball Centre, Monday, April 28, 2014 — Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) lead throughout to beat River Valley High School (RVHS) 79–32 in the National A Division Boys Basketball Championship.
Ong Sze Chuan (HCI #11) scored a game-high 16 points, while Tang Kai Wei (#11) and Jia Zhenmin (#15) of RVHS managed a team-high seven points each.
HCI dominated in the first quarter of the game to take a 24–2 lead. Sze Chuan (#11) chalked up 10 points alone in the quarter. At the start of the second quarter, RVHS scored five points straight to trail 7–24. HCI missed a couple of underbaskets but came back later in the quarter with strong drives and good finishing to match RVHS’s aggressive offensive efforts. The teams scored one after another to register a 12–11 second quarter. HCI led 36–13 going into the halftime break.
In the second half, HCI had good team communication on the court, with Johrathon Cheok (#9) playing a huge part in that as he directed his teammates to open spaces. HCI also intercepted several weak passes to go on fastbreaks, scoring easy baskets from layups. Yap Teng Suan (HCI #6) used quick drives to the basket to put in 10 points in the third quarter alone. Tang Kai Wei (RVHS #11) put up strong shot blocks to deny his opponents more points, and converted well for RVHS in the paint. However, it was not enough as HCI dominated this quarter to take on a 57–21 lead at the end of the third quarter.
In the final quarter, HCI continued to put up strong defensive efforts to earn turnovers, then making their chances count when they score easy twos on fast breaks. On the other hand, RVHS struggled to find the range with most of their shots, and the good defence from their opponents only made them release flustered shots which did not make their marks. With that, the game concluded with HCI defeating RVHS 79–32.
