Physical Education and Sports Education Branch, May 2, 2014 — Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC) beat River Valley High School (RVHS) 2–0 (25–17, 25–16) in their final group game in the A Division Boys Volleyball Championship.

Both teams finished their season in the top eight and have been eliminated from the tournament.

Early into the first set, the scores were tied at 6–6 when ACJC pulled away to lead 9–6. ACJC played their offensive game with good team effort as the players took turns to tip the ball to open spaces in RVHS’s court. On the other hand, Tang Rui Yang (RVHS #5) paced his team with strong spikes to put points onto the scoreboard. From 9–6, ACJC led throughout the set to take their first win (25–17).

After the break, RVHS stepped up their offensive game and threatened ACJC’s defence with their constant spikes. With that, they managed to match up to ACJC’s attacking efforts and matched point for point until it was 8–8. Then on, ACJC executed well-timed blocks with their good footwork, allowing them to stop RVHS’s attacks on many occasions and to keep the ball in their opponents’ court. Not only that, Yeo Sun Peng (ACJC #7) maintained his team’s offensive composure by putting in consistent spikes to grab crucial points. ACJC went on to win their second set 25–16.

ACJC captain, Sun Peng (#7), said, “It was quite good. We played quite well and despite all the previous matches that we lost, we improved gradually as a team.”

ACJC vice-captain, Yu Jin (#13), added, “I think it was quite fun. We managed to play well as a team. All the non-experienced players showed that they’ve trained well. We are very bonded as a team.”

RVHS captain, Jian Hao (#7), said, “I think it is actually quite an experience because most of our team just joined us in year 1, so it’s kind of like a new team. We only had a few experienced players from last year. We actually had a lot of fun along the way, like coaching them and seeing them improve along the way. It’s kind of like a team thing. Being able to achieve top eight, we feel like it’s quite an achievement already.”
