Physical Education and Sports Education Branch, May 2, 2014 — Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) top group with 2–0 win over Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC) (25–12, 25–13) in their final group game in the A Division Girls Volleyball Championship.
With this win, HCI remain undefeated and top group X to move into the semi-finals.
HCI showed their offensive dominance from the start of the game to take on a 11–7 lead midway through the game. ACJC’s ineffective communication on the court also triggered several defensive mistakes, allowing HCI to capitalize on them to score six unanswered points and push their lead to 17–7. Gwyneth Teo (HCI #1) paced her team with strong short spikes to constantly put in points. Agnes Ng (ACJC #15) on the other hand, tried to prevent HCI from pulling away by executing well-timed blocks at the net. Despite her valiant efforts to reduce the deficit, HCI still managed to outscore ACJC 8–5 towards the end to take the set 25–12.
In the second set, Gwyneth (HCI #1) continued with her good offensive game from the first set to consistently threaten ACJC’s defence. Eirena Beh (#3) of HCI also put up good blocks to deny ACJC their much needed points. On the other hand, Amanda Tan (ACJC #11) led her team’s attacks with spikes that went unattended as they landed on the uncovered areas on HCI’s court. Her teammate Alfreda Lee (#16) also blocked several tips by the net to continue the rally. Towards the end of the game, HCI were leading 19–13 and dominated with their strong spikes to go on a scoring streak, winning their second set 25–13.
HCI player, Jia Min (#2), said, “Our team played well today, but there’s always room for improvements. But we really worked well together as a team and we really gave it our all. I’m proud of my team today. We have a lot to work on but we will try our best.”
Jenies (#5), added, “We started off not playing up to our standard, but we worked hard together and everything, and played quite well today.”
Yi Ying (#8), said, “I just think we came in wanting to fight with our 100% and we did that.”
