Republic Polytechnic, Tuesday, May 6, 2014 — Nanyang Junior College (NYJC) recorded its first victory with a 6–2 win over Tampines Junior College (TPJC) in the National A Division Floorball Championship. Teo Yue Yang (NYJC #35) and Lim You Xuan (TPJC #43) scored two goals apiece to lead all scorers.
The win puts NYJC at the top of Group B with a 1–0 win–loss record. TPJC fall to fourth in the group with a 0–1 record.
NYJC had the most of the opportunities early on in the first period. They kept the ball in TP’s half and peppered shots at the TP goal. The opening goal came from Daniel Chia (NYJC #27), who put away a pass from Joshua Chin (NYJC #10) to open the scoring. From that point on, TPJC’s defence started to crumble and they let in another three goals before the period ended.
Possession was more even between both sides in the second quarter. TPJC did a better job of defending the ball, as their players closed out faster on the ball. NYJC conceded a penalty midway through the period and Tan You Xuan (TPJC #43) showed nerves of steel to calmly fake out the keeper and slot the ball past him. NYJC had three shots on target in the period, but the TPJC goalkeeper was more than able to keep the shots out.
TPJC drew another penalty in the third period. You Xuan (TPJC #43) converted the penalty to pull TPJC to within two goals. However, NYJC responded quickly through Morris Ngiam (NYJC #4). He scored shortly after the restart to restore NYJC’s three goal lead. From that point, NYJC were able to cruise for the rest of the match and eventually finished 6–2 victors.
NYJC top scorer, Teo Yue Yang (#35), said, “TPJC were good today, but our team also played well. We did not make good passes and shots but we still found a way to win.”
