Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, May 7, 2014 — Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) defeated Nanyang Junior College (NYJC) 43–33 in the National A Division Girls Basketball Championship to remain undefeated.
Chan Chu Yin (HCI #6) led her team with 13 points, while Winnchis Yap (NYJC #15) had a team-high 12 points.
Tan Li Min (NYJC #7) converted an underbasket shot to open the scoring. On the next transition, Charlene Sia (HCI #8) netted an unguarded 3-pointer to put HCI 3–2 up. From there, HCI went for loose balls and capitalized on fast breaks to register an 8–0 scoring run (11–2). HCI led 16–4 by the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, NYJC got past HCI’s defence several times with their strong drives, but were unable to find the net with their shots. HCI played with good team effort, dishing out passes to their open teammates to convert at the net. NYJC’s Sixu Vongsuvanish (#6) then stepped up offensively to score a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer to keep her team in contention for the win. NYJC trailed 11–25 going into the halftime break.
HCI faced a scoring drought in the third quarter, as they were unable to convert most of their open shots and layups. On the other hand, Winnchis Yap (#15) rounded up NYJC’s attacks with her high conversion rate in the paint. NYJC outscored HCI 12–5 this quarter to reduce the deficit to seven points (23–30).
The last quarter was especially fast-paced as both teams ran fast breaks at every opportunity, and alternated at scoring. Sim Lee Ching (NYJC #11) put in good effort offensively as she went for rebounds diligently and distributed good passes to her teammates. On the other hand, Freda (HCI #7) came in towards the end of the quarter to secure several rebounds for HCI. Chan Chu Yin (HCI #6) also played a good offensive game this quarter, scoring nine points to keep HCI’s lead in check. HCI eventually beat NYJC 43–33 to remain undefeated in the second round of the tournament.
NYJC vice-captain, Sixu (#6), said, “I guess probably at the first quarter, we weren’t as prepared so we didn’t play to our best. In the second quarter we slowly started to pick up and got a hang of the momentum of the game and started to play to our pace. Initially we probably weren’t very confident of ourselves and were a little afraid of them. But after that we gained our confidence and managed to play better in the second and third quarter.”
