Pasir Ris Sports Centre, Saturday, May 10, 2014 — In line with Mothers’ Day, Sport Singapore (SportSG) paid tribute to mothers who attended the ActiveSG East Open House by giving each of them a stalk of flower.
ActiveSG is a national movement that aims to provide affordable sports programmes for Singaporeans of all ages and levels. It is one of the recommendations of Vision 2030.
Themed “Meet the Super Heroes”, the ActiveSG East Open House provided families with a light-hearted platform to bond via various sport activities, and at the same time recognise the tireless contributions of mothers.
At the Open House, SportSG staff and volunteers were present to assist in sign-ups of the new ActiveSG membership. The Open House also included various activities such as studio fitness programmes, aqua programmes and wheelchair basketball among many others. In addition, there was a booth for children to write their Mothers’ Day dedications on heart-shaped post-it notes.
Dawn Seah, Assistant Director, ActiveSG East, commented, “We wanted to excite people to join us, both adults and their children. So we thought of a superhero theme to make it very exciting. We also thought of mothers, as our superheroes. We want to acknowledge and recognise them as our favourite superheroes. Mothers and superheroes match, so it formed a great theme.”
“We wanted to display our theme very loudly, and that’s why all of us are dressed up as superheroes. We want to make the Open House fun for everyone. We also want to encourage parents and children to participate as a team and conquer the activities together,” added Dawn. Dawn was decked in a Batwoman costume throughout the Open House.
52-year-old Winnifer Tay attended the event with her 10-year-old son. “I think it is a very nice gesture for SportSG to commemorate Mothers’ Day in such a way. I was surprised to receive a flower actually. I thought it was going to be just another day out chasing my boy around,” laughed the housewife.
Dennis Tay, a 11-year-old student at Tao Nan School, found out about the event from his classmate. “My classmate told all of us in class and asked if we wanted to go together. I like superheroes, especially Spiderman, and I wanted to play the games here,” said Dennis.
Denise Koh, 44, came all the way down from Bishan with her husband, Michael Koh, and their two daughters. “My daughters enjoyed the Open House at Bishan last week so much that they bugged me and my husband to take them here today. I like the thought of giving mothers flowers. It makes me feel appreciated and at least we know what we’re doing doesn’t get taken for granted.”
The ActiveSG membership is valid for life and it is open to all Singaporeans and permanent residents. Membership is free.
Over the past weeks, Sport Singapore also held several open houses at various Sports Centres island-wide, to facilitate registrations of the ActiveSG membership.
