Republic Polytechnic, Thursday, May 15, 2014 — Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) registered their first win with a come-from-behind 3–1 win over Tampines Junior College (TPJC) in the National A Division Floorball Championship. Darrell Tan (HCI #7), Mervin Lim (HCI #10), Nigel Yeo (HCI #15) and Muhammad Atiqullah (TPJC #11) all scored one goal apiece.
The win lifts HCI to a 1–2 win–loss record in Group B. They now lie fourth in the group. TPJC fall to fifth in the group with a 0–3 record.
HCI went full out on attack in the first period. They took any open shot that they saw, regardless of how far they were away from goal. They had two power plays in the period, but TPJC were able to kill both of them. Daniel Harun (TPJC #14) did an admirable job between the posts, keeping out shot after shot from the HCI players. He single-handedly kept his team in the game throughout the period with his saves.
The breakthrough came in the second period of the game, when Muhammad Atiqullah (TPJC #11) scored against the run of play. The play visibly jolted the HCI team. They had been shooting at the TPJC goal the whole period, only for Daniel (TPJC #14) to thwart them with his saves. Their chance came towards the end, when a penalty was awarded to HCI. Nigel Yeo (HCI #15) stepped up to take the penalty. He slowly took the ball up, before faking and calmly slotting it past Daniel (TPJC #14) to score.
The final period was evenly matched between both teams as they sought to break the deadlock. HCI pounced first, when Mervin Lim (HCI #10) backhanded a shot from the middle. This gave HCI the impetus to continue attacking hard. Their persistence paid off when Darrell Tan (HCI #7) took advantage of some confusion among the TPJC defence to score another goal. Despite this, TPJC did not give up until the very end. They fought all the way to the final buzzer, but were unable to create another shot on goal. In the end, HCI came away with the 3–1 win, registering their first win of the season.
HCI captain, Justin Lim (#6), said, “We are very happy with the win. We played without pressure and showed what we were capable of. The TPJC goal was a surprise as it was their first shot on target. But we stuck to the belief and I am glad that we were able to come back.”
