Republic Polytechnic, Tuesday, May 27, 2014 — Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC) are through to the final for the first time in their history after beating defending champions, Victoria Junior College (VJC), 1–0. The only goal in the game was scored by Issac Lee (ACJC #10).

The game started with VJC building up play from their own half patiently and methodically in the first period. A deflection off an ACJC player almost netted the first goal for VJC. ACJC did not have any real shots on the goal until late in the first period.

Good running by Josiah Lim (VJC #89) helped to create space, and VJC held majority of the possession for the quarter. However, a sudden turn of events occurred as Issac Lee (ACJC #10) scored the first goal of the match from the left wing, giving ACJC the 1–0 lead at the end of the first period.

The second period saw VJC make many good passes to create goal opportunities. However, the ACJC goal keeper, Wong Zong Yan (#1), blocked the attempts well. ACJC were also able maintain possession of the ball, and dribble it around the court without interception. A few good saves by the VJC goal keeper also helped in preventing ACJC from scoring any more goals.

ACJC started to gain more possession of the ball in the third period. More goal attempts were made on both sides, but to no avail as both goal keepers made good saves. With just four minutes to go, the cheering in the crowd intensified as the VJC supporters started shouting, “Fight on VJ, Fight on!”. However, VJC did not manage to score any goals. Another goal attempt by ACJC nearly went into the goal, as the ball slipped out of the VJC goal keeper’s hands twice. However, he managed to save the ball on the third attempt. The game ended with ACJC clinching the 1–0 victory.

ACJC captain, Ewin Ng (#2), said, “I feel that it was a good match. We followed our coach’s tactics, and we followed through well. The goal scored in the first period gave us more confidence, that we still stand a chance to win the finals.”

ACJC will face Raffles Institution in the final on Thursday, May 29 at Bedok Sports Hall.
