OCBC Aquatic Centre, Sunday, June 15, 2014 — Singapore (SIN) led throughout the game to bring down Malaysia (MAS) 19–6 in their second game of the Southeast Asian Swimming Championships 2014. Both teams are playing a three-match series, and Singapore have defeated Malaysia in their first game.
Malaysia’s Fam Jia Yi (#12) led all scorers with a game-high five goals, while Gilbert Beh (#11) and Samuel Yu (#8) of Singapore registered four goals each.
Fam Jia Yi (MAS #12) opened the scoring for the game, going for a shot over goalkeeper Lee Kai Yang (SIN #1) to make the first mark on the scoresheet (1–0). For Singapore, Gilbert Beh (#11) scored the first goal after receiving a well-placed pass from Yip Yang (#4).
Midway through the first quarter, Koh Jian Ying (SIN #2) went on a strong drive to bring the ball up to their offensive half, and then opted to pass the ball out to Gilbert (SIN #11). Gilbert then made the shot to help his team break out of the tie (2–1). Then on, Singapore managed to overcome their opponents’ defence and scored four more goals to take a 6–1 lead at the end of the quarter.
Singapore’s Lim Churn Yi (#9) and Yu Jun Jie (#10) totalled three goals in the first half of the second quarter to push their team’s lead to 9–1. Sharvin (MAS #11) then scored one from a distance to stop Singapore’s scoring streak (2–9). Malaysia stepped up their game thereafter and secured more possession towards the end of the second quarter. Jia Yi (MAS #12) made the final shot to trail 3–9 going into the halftime break.
In the third quarter, Singapore dominated on possession and executed their offensive plays effortlessly, with Jian Ying (SIN #2) leading his team’s plays with good drives and well-placed passes. This allowed them to go on an 8–1 scoring run against Malaysia to end the quarter with an impressive 17–4 lead.
Malaysia’s Jia Yi (#12) netted two goals straight in the final quarter to reduce the deficit (6–17). Singapore were goalless in the first half of the quarter, but Churn Yi (#9) and Jun Jie (#10) scored one each towards the end of the game to claim a 19–6 win over Malaysia.
Singapore U-23 captain, Jian Ying (#2), said, “I think we were better yesterday, as we were a bit sloppy today. I think it’s something for us to improve on before the game on Wednesday. We were a bit slack on our defence today, so I think we probably have to be more attentive.”
