Singapore Basketball Centre, Tuesday, July 1, 2014 — Edgefield Secondary (EDG) brought down Anderson Secondary (AND) 45–13 to clinch their first win in the North Zone C Division Girls Basketball Championship.
Yee Xin (EDG #10) had a game-high 22 points, while Hannah (AND #6) scored a team-high six points.
Edgefield’s early scoring outburst allowed them to take a 12–2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Yee Xin’s (EDG #10) strong finishing allowed her to pour in an impressive nine points in this quarter alone.
Anderson came back stronger in the second quarter, connecting better on their offensive plays. However, Edgefield’s Regina (#11) retaliated with an even more diligent defence, denying several of her opponents’ attempts to help keep her team’s lead in check. Although Anderson managed to match Edgefield’s scoring (5–6) this quarter, it was not enough to reduce the deficit as they trailed 7–18 going into the halftime break.
In the third quarter, Regina (EDG #11) netted a shot on the elbow to open the scoring for her team (20–7). Then on, Edgefield put up a well-coordinated defence to limit their opponents’ offensive plays, intercepting their passes to go on fast breaks. With good team chemistry, Edgefield managed to score 20 unanswered points to push their lead to 38–7, cutting off Anderson’s attacks entirely.
Edgefield then poured in five points at the start of the final quarter, before Anderson’s Hannah (#6) converted on an open layup to add to the scoreboard after facing a scoring drought earlier on. Iffah (AND #4) then broke through Edgefield’s defence to go up against her defender for another two (11–43). Thereafter, Edgefield’s dominance allowed them to finish off with a 45–13 win in their opening game of the season.
Edgefield captain, Regina (#11), said, “It was a thrilling game. We trained very hard for the season and it was good today. I think we could improve on our communication on court as well as our stamina.”
