North Zone C Div Bball (Girls): Yishun beat Woodgrove 22–16 to clinch first win

Singapore Basketball Centre, Tuesday, July 1, 2014 — Yishun Secondary (YSS) broke through in the final quarter to beat Woodgrove Secondary (WGS) 22–16, clinching their first win in the North Zone C Division Girls Basketball Championship.

Regina Schiele (YSS #11) scored a game-high 11 points, while Wee Xin Yi (WGS #11) paced her team with eight points.

Both teams appeared to be evenly-matched in the first half, running fast breaks at every opportunity but were unable to convert their attempts into points. They had equal chances to hold on to and extend the lead, but bad finishing saw them tie at 4–4 at the end of the first quarter. Yishun and Woodgrove brought the tie to 7–7 just before the halftime break.

In the third quarter, Chelsea Ng (YSS #7) stepped up her game and contributed significantly offensively, as she was the only scorer for her team. On the other hand, Woodgrove’s Wee Xin Yi (#11) and Chong Wen Hui (#14) converted well in the paint to allow the team to take a slim one-point lead at the end of the third quarter (12–11).

Jun Hui (YSS #6) earned the lead for Yishun when she converted an easy two in the paint (13–12) at the start of the final quarter. Then on, Regina (YSS #11) drove all the way to the basket to score another two, pushing their lead to 15–12. Yishun never looked back thereafter as they scored a few more baskets to keep their lead in check.

Despite Woodgrove’s valiant efforts to chase the points, they faced low conversion rate and failed to match Yishun’s attempts. In the final seconds, Vivien Chia (YSS #5) scored one to tie up the game with a 22–16 win over Woodgrove.

Yishun captain, Chelsea (#7), said, “It was a tough game. I think the sec twos were okay, but the sec ones will have to try harder. I think we could improve more on our defence.”

Yishun top-scorer, Regina (#11), said, “I think we tried to do our best during the game as we really wanted to win. I think our defence could be better, and we could also try to take more underbasket shots.”
