Singapore Basketball Centre, Tuesday, July 1, 2014 — Yishun Town Secondary (YTS) defeated Nan Chiau High 49–14 to mark their first win of the season in the North Zone C Division Girls Basketball Championship.
Nur Afiyah (YTS #5) scored a game-high 14 points in the game, while Jermaine Lim (NCH #10) led her team with five points.
Yishun Town went on a scoring streak at the start of the game, registering a 14–0 run to stun their opponents. Nur Afiyah (YTS #5) played a huge part in that, as she took the lead to go on strong drives and converted well on fast breaks. On the other hand, Nan Chiau High were seemingly limited by Yishun Town’s defence and were unable to break into the paint for easy points. With two minutes remaining in the first quarter, Jermaine Lim (NCH #10) converted a free throw to score the first point for her team (1–14). Nur Afiyah (YTS #5) then made the final basket to tie up the first quarter with a 16–1 lead.
Stacey Tan (YTS #14) opened the scoring for the second quarter, scoring on a layup after receiving a well-placed pass from teammate Yeo Yu Min (#13). Nan Chiau High stepped up their game this quarter, making efforts to go for every loose ball. This allowed them to break through Yishun Town’s defence this time round, registering a 7–8 quarter to trail 8–24 going into the halftime break.
Nur Afiyah (YTS #5) continued with her good game from the first half, playing a crucial role during offensive plays as she dished out well-placed passes to her teammates when they went on fast breaks. Yishun Town’s good team chemistry allowed them to score 10 unanswered points at the start of the third quarter. They went on to take a 43–14 lead at the end of the quarter. In the final quarter, there were many turnovers during the game but both sides struggled with bad finishing. Yishun Town scored six points this quarter to end the game 49–14 winners, marking their first victory in the season.
Yishun Town captain, Stacey (#14), said, “I think my team have put in the effort to fight for the ball and also, put in a lot of team spirit. For the rest of our games, we can improve on our block outs, rebounds and do proper outlets. Everyone will have a part to play.”
