PESEB, Wednesday, July 2, 2014 — Queensway Secondary (QSS) notched its second win of the season with a 43–33 win over St. Andrew’s Secondary (SAS) in the South Zone C Division Boys Basketball Championships. Calvert Tay (SAS #10) led all scorers with 18 points, while Justin Sim (QSS #4) had 17 in his team’s win.

QSS now top Group F with a 2–0 win-loss record. SASS fall to a 0–2 win-loss record.

Both teams struggled to get their engines going in the first quarter. Errant passes flew all over the court for turnovers. QSS eventually got a hang of things first, as Low Wei Qing (QSS #8) and Justin Sim (QSS #4) got on the board for the team. This allowed QSS to hold a slim 7–5 lead at the end of the period.

Calvert Tay (SAS #10) shouldered the scoring load for SAS throughout the game, as his teammates had trouble getting to the rim. SAS were let down by bad rotations on defence in the second quarter, which allowed QSS to get to the rim easily. Despite this, they only trailed by one point at the half-time break.

The third quarter saw Justin Sim (QSS #4) step up for his team. He nailed a couple of jumpers and was also actively stealing the ball on defence. His performance on both ends of the court was responsible for his team’s scoring spurt in the period. SAS managed to keep pace, as Calvert Tay (#10) scored all nine of his team’s points in the period.

QSS sealed the win in the final quarter, taking advantage of a fatigued SAS team to pull away. Hao Jun (QSS #14) and Justin Sim (QSS #4) were instrumental for their team in this period, as they accounted for 12 of the 19 points scored by QSS in the period. QSS eventually came away with the 43–33 win, putting them in a good position to qualify for the second round. They will next face Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary on Thursday, July 10, at 12:20 pm at PESEB.

Queensway captain, Low Wei Qing (#8), said, “We were very nervous at the start. The game was very exciting. We managed to hold back the pressure by telling the team to calm down and do well on defence. We hope to get top 4 in the zone.”
