Physical Education and Sports Education Branch, Thursday, July 3, 2014 — Catholic High School (CH) beat Chong Boon Secondary (CBS) 2–0 (25–11, 25–14) to qualify for the semi-finals in the South Zone C Division Boys Volleyball Championship.
This is Catholic High’s second consecutive win in the tournament, and they will face Ang Mo Kio Secondary in their final group game. On the other hand, Chong Boon have failed to qualify for the semi-finals with this loss. They will meet Clementi Woods Secondary in their final game of the season.
Catholic High had a good start to their game, earning easy points through strong spikes that were difficult to dive for. On the other hand, Chong Boon were trailing behind but still took it point by point, with (#2) putting in good drives to help pace his team’s offensive plays. However, Catholic High were focused on their game and capitalized on their good team chemistry on court to ice the first set 25–11.
In the second set, Clive Ling’s (CH #13) strong spikes earned the first two points for his side. Chong Boon were lagging behind in points but still put in good efforts offensively to consistently challenge Catholic High’s defence. This allowed them to level at 4–4. Then on, Catholic High steadied themselves and began to play their game, pulling away to take an 8–4 lead.
Thereafter, despite (CBS #2)’s well-timed blocks at the net, Catholic High continued to launch consistent attacks, threatening their opponents’ defence to gradually add points onto the scoreboard. They were then looking at a second win and Joel Hiroyuki Oh’s (CH #2) good serves towards the end of the set allowed them to eventually take it 25–14.
Catholic High captain, Clive (#13), said, “I think we improved on our skills today, and we coordinated better and had more communication on court.”
