Physical Education and Sports Education Branch, Tuesday, July 8, 2014 — Hua Yi Secondary (HY) put up a good fight against Boon Lay Secondary (BLS) to register a 2–1 win in the West Zone C Division Girls Volleyball Championship.

Hua Yi finished second in the group with this win, thus qualifying for the second round of the tournament. On the other hand, Boon Lay have a 1–2 win-loss record and this is their final game in the season.

Boon Lay’s mistakes early into the first set gave Hua Yi the first two points. From there, both teams appeared to be evenly-matched and were tied at 9–9 midway through the set. Hua Yi then broke through to take a 11–9 lead and never looked back thereafter, registering a 14–6 scoring run to take it 25–15.

Boon Lay and Hua Yi seemed to have lost focus midway through the second set, as they made mistakes time and time again, resulting in a 13–13 tie. Thereafter, Boon Lay scored three unanswered points to take a 16–13 lead. (BLS #8) was putting up a good defensive game in an attempt to fend off Hua Yi’s attacks, and she was also making good serves to make it difficult for Hua Yi to attack. Towards the end of the set, Hua Yi struggled with poor team coordination and were constantly making mistakes. This allowed Boon Lay to maintain their lead to close the set 25–20.

In the third set, both Boon Lay and Hua Yi were looking for a win and as such the game proceeded at a relatively fast pace. The game was level at 1–1 early into the set, and both teams then brought the tie to 11–11. For Hua Yi, Trina Lim (#8) was setting good balls to pace her team’s offensive game, while Hoo Shao Yee (#10) and Joleen Koh (#3) were doubling up with strong drives to consistently threaten Boon Lay’s defence.

On the other hand, (BLS #9) tried to get past Hua Yi’s defence with well-placed attacks. Boon lay’s good team chemistry on court then allowed them to take a 13–11 lead midway through the game. They maintained their lead all the way until it was 22–20.

Things took a turn from there as Hua Yi started to chase the points aggressively. They managed to draw even with Boon Lay at 22–22, and took over the lead thereafter. Hua Yi were then leading 25–24 and were looking at a match-point to close the set, but Boon Lay retaliated with good defence to keep themselves in contention for the win. Hua Yi however, were determined to take the set and made good offensive efforts to score two points straight to ice it 27–25.

Hua Yi captain, Shao Yee (#10), said, “It was not supposed to turn out that bad but I feel that today’s game was really fast paced. I think we didn’t really perform up to expectations as we did quite badly. If not for our coach who told us which method is the best to defeat Boon Lay, we might have lost the game. For our future games, we could try to panic less, be more confident and not give points away.”
