Physical Education and Sports Education Branch, Tuesday, July 8, 2014 — Nanyang Girls’ High (NYGH) beat River Valley High (RVHS) 2–0 (25–12, 25–18) in the West Zone C Division Girls Volleyball Championship.
Nanyang Girls’ High registered a 3–0 win-loss record with this win, and have qualified for the second round. On the other hand, River Valley High have been eliminated from the tournament and this is their final game of the season.
River Valley High scored three points straight to open the scoring for the first set. Nanyang Girls’ High then chased the points to level at 3–3. With Nanyang Girls’ High being more focused in the game, they managed to score six more unanswered points to take a clear 9–3 lead.
On the other hand, despite having a good start to the game, River Valley High lost their momentum thereafter and struggled with poor team coordination on court, giving away several points to their opponents. Amanda Ng (NYGH #3) was pacing her team’s offensive plays with strong spikes, and coupled with good team effort, Nanyang Girls’ High proceeded to ice the first set 25–12.
Chua Kai Shuen’s (NYGH #4) good serve clinched the first point for her team in the second set. Then on, Nanyang Girls’ High capitalized on Kai Shuen’s consistent tough serves and Amanda’s (NYGH #3) well-timed spikes to push their lead to 6–0.
(RVHS #17)’s defensive block at the net secured the first point for her side (1–6). Although (RVHS #17) was leading her team’s defensive game with good jumps, Nanyang Girls’ High were relatively more well-coordinated in their plays and threatened River Valley High with their attacks time and time again.
Nanyang Girls’ High made a couple of mistakes later in the set, but good team effort allowed them to gradually pull away. They took a 10-point lead following Kai Shuen’s (#4) tough serve. From there, they managed to keep their lead in check and took the set 25–18.
Nanyang Girls’ High co-captain, Khai Shuen (#4), said, “It was a bad game for us. I think we have to work on our receiving the most, and our goal for the season is national champions.”
Captain Amanda (#3), said, “I think we played badly today. We have to work on our communication on court.”
