Up to 500 of the best and most popular school athletes will compete in the inaugural Red All-Star Weekend (RASW) on August 8 and 9, 2014 at *SCAPE. The RASW, which will be a part of *SCAPE’s SG(almost)50 National Day celebration, brings together sports-loving Singapore youth to honour the role of sports in nurturing individual, community, and national identity.
These school athletes comprise of all-stars who have been nominated and voted for by readers in the Red Sports polls for the best school athletes in basketball, floorball, and football. The polls, conducted for nine sports, have drawn votes from over 12,000 readers since January 2014. Student-athletes aged 15 to 21 who wish to challenge the all-stars can also sign up to compete.
Aside from basketball, floorball, and football tournaments, in which the school athletes will play small-sided games in courts adjacent to each other, there will also be entertainment with bands Emerald Street, Anna Judge April, Hometown Heroes (SG), and Tim De Cotta x The Warriors, providing music, and parkour academy and agency Superfly Monkey Dragons performing the art of freerunning and conducting workshops on the ground.
16-year-old Kovic Lee, a basketballer for Unity Secondary, ranks in the Red Sports poll as one of the top ‘B’ Division players for 2014, and will play in the basketball tournament at RASW as one of the all-stars.
“I’m looking forward to competing with friends from other schools at the event,” said Kovic, whose season culminated in April when he won the National Inter-School ‘B’ Division basketball championship with Unity Secondary. He will team up with fellow all-stars from other schools at RASW.
18-year-old Muhammad Shafiq Bin Jalavddin, an all-star who will be competing in the football tournament, is also looking forward to know his former competitors better. The Anglo-Chinese Junior College footballer said: “The event is a good way for us to bond, put aside our differences and have fun together on a special occasion. It’s a good way for us athletes to celebrate the nation’s birthday together.”
Budding student-athletes can also look forward to meeting professional national athletes in the form of footballers from the LionsXII team and basketballers from the Singapore Slingers.
“I’m looking forward to appearing at the event because I would like to become a role model to the kids playing soccer, and inspire them to succeed in what they want to do. It’s not impossible to catch your dream if you really believe in it and, of course, work hard to make it happen,” said Faris Ramli, who will be one of four LionsXII players (including Gabriel Quak, Afiq Yunos, and Khairul Nizam) to appear at the event.
16-year-old Aloysius Teo from Tanglin Secondary, who signed up for the event to challenge the basketball all-stars, said: “It would be awesome to meet the Singapore Slingers. They are role models for us as basketballers in Singapore. I would like to play basketball with them and get their signature.”
Leslie Tan, founder and editor of Red Sports, said: “We want to bring together some of the best school athletes in basketball, floorball, and football to recognise them after a hard school season. The Red All-Star Weekend is meant for them to have fun and enjoy themselves, and for their teammates and fans of school sports to see them up close in action.”
Those who want to watch the action at RASW have to register on the event webpage for tickets, which are free.
