Singapore Institute of Management, Wednesday, September 18, 2014 — Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) defeated Nanyang Technological University (NTU) 3–0 (25–12, 25–19, 25–18) in their final game of the Singapore University Games (SUniG) Women’s Volleyball season to clinch their third straight title.
The defending champions demonstrated their offensive capabilities early in the game, easily clinching the first set with a score of 25–12.
In the second set, Koay Yi Jing (#10) and Jaime Lee (#18) shouldered NTU’s offensive load with several spikes, keeping the game within reach. However, the defensive plays of Tan Shiang Theng (#4) and Lim Chien Wen (#15) helped SIM maintain the lead to eventually take the second set with a score of 25–19.
Early in the third set, NTU took their first lead of the game, putting up four quick points. Unfortunately, they could not hold on to their lead as Lim Chien Wen (#15) propelled SIM back into the lead with her powerful spikes. Two consecutive blocks from Lim Chien Wen (#15) gave SIM their game point, as they clinched the final set with a score of 25–18.
SIM captain, Ang Qi Hui (#7), said, “It feels great but I think there is still room for improvement. We will continue to train hard for the upcoming Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Games and aim for the title.”
With the victory, SIM have concluded their season with a flawless record. Singapore Management University (SMU) beat National University of Singapore (NUS) 3–1 in the later game to set up a three-way tie. NTU, SMU and NUS each have a 1–2 win-loss record, and by virtue of point differentials, NTU finished as second runners-up.
