Singapore Sports Institute, Saturday, November 1, 2014 — After a successful Asian Games outing, 200 Team Singapore athletes participated in a two-day workshop, which served as a networking and bonding session for the national athletes of different sports.
On the first day of the workshop, Minister of Culture, Community and Youth, Lawrence Wong, joined the athletes in the creation of an art collage as a lead-up activity to the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games next year.
“The purpose of the 28th SEA Games is bigger than you and I. It’s about a bigger purpose for Singapore how we can inspire our whole nation through sports and through each of your sporting stories,” said Minister Wong to the athletes.
“I think it’s important that we take a step back and think about this bigger cause we are trying to achieve. To do that, we need to be united, we can’t be fighting for individual glory, but we also need to be thinking of how we can be united as a team,” the Minister added.
The two-day workshop, themed “My Story, Our Legacy”, also gave some of the younger and up-and-coming athletes, such as floorballer Muhammad Yusuf, opportunities to learn from the senior athletes through team-based activities and games.
The 18-year-old, who is currently preparing for the GCE ‘A’ Level exams at Meridian Junior College, said, “This is my first time attending such an event and I didn’t know what to expect. It turned out to be fun and really meaningful, as we got to meet and know other athletes, who were older and of different sports, on a personal level, forging friendships along the way.”
